As we begin this season, we look forward to many fun times together; some of those times simply celebrating friends and others celebrating improved times, individual victories and team victories. The main purpose of the Southeast Swim Team is to have fun simultaneous to learning more about swimming.  One of the great things about swimming is that there is ALWAYS room for improvement.

Tiger Sharks Code of Conduct

The coaching staff expects each and every swimmer to treat others with respect.  Inappropriate behavior will be dealt with initially by a warning.  If the warning is unsuccessful, then notification will be made to the parent.

If a swimmer arrives at practices and elects not to participate, without valid reason, they will be asked to sit by the pool entrance until the practice is over and parents will be contacted.

METHODS OF COMMUNICATION

There are pockets on the inside of the Swim Team Room doors.  The pockets are labeled and are assigned to one-two swimmers or a ‘family’ of swimmers.  Please check the pockets for important information about upcoming activities and events.  These pockets will also be used for ribbons.  Swimmers will usually receive their ribbons at the first ‘night’ practice following a meet.

You can communicate with a coach by sending them an email.  We will also communicate with our parents by email and the website (www.swimse.com).  If you have not already received team email, please send your correct email address to Lisa Eilers @ leilers@triad.rr.com.

Parents and Swimmers:  PLEASE do not use practice time to talk with a coach.  Any concerns you have can be addressed either before or following practices or via the methods mentioned above.

Swim Practices

Practices are the most important part of becoming a ‘great’ swimmer.  You must learn how to swim a stroke technically correct before you can swim the stroke fast.  We will spend much of our time working on stroke technique, starts and turns during practices.

We will also use this time to prepare for meets.  If you wear your goggles during meets, then you should also wear them in practice.  This will help you make appropriate adjustments to your goggles and decrease the likelihood of them falling off during a meet.

Once school is out, there will be eight practices a week with morning and night options.  Swimmers are encouraged to attend as many practices as possible.  Practice helps to improve both technique and times.  Swimmers should be on deck at least five minutes before the scheduled practice time with a towel and be prepared for dry-land training and stretching.

Please do not leave practice early without checking with a coach.  Just let them know when you arrive that you will need to leave at a certain time.

**Time Trials

Time trials will be held Saturday June 6th.  These times will be entered into the Hy-Tek system and used to help determine relays.  We ask that parents help out with timing and recording times.  This is a great opportunity for new swimmers to see how a meet is run as well as parents learning new volunteer jobs.  If you have times from year-round swimming please submit them to the coaches.

**PRACTICE SCHEDULE:

This year, practice groups will be determined by age in addition to skill level rather than age alone.  We will use the first week of practice to determine which group best fits your swimmer. The groups are as follows:

Black: The highest training group in which the swimmer can complete starts, turns and at least a 50 all 4 competitive stokes. Primarily for swimmers 13 and up, this group will apply advanced technique work and will be based on interval training.

Orange: This group is designed for 11-up swimmers who can swim a 50 Freestyle and Backstroke and has basic knowledge of Breaststroke or Butterfly.  This group will be highly focused on technique work as well as building speed and endurance.

Sharks: This group is for the beginning swimmer, as well as ages 10 and under.  Practices will be focused on teaching technique for all 4 competitive strokes.  Swimmers will also gain confidence in using a starting block as well as stroke turns.

****If you will be unable to attend a meet, for whatever reason, please indicate this on the sign-up sheets provided on the bulletin board located near the Swim Team Room.

All meets start at 5:30 pm.  Swimmers should arrive at the pool 5-10 minutes prior to their scheduled warm up time.  (When at home, warm ups begin at 4:45; and away warm ups begin at 5:00)  Swimmers should remain in the area designated for Southeast swimmers during the meet.  This makes it easier for coaches and team parents to find them when it is time for their event(s).  Entries will be posted at least one day before the meet.  It is a good idea to record the event numbers on the back of the swimmer’s hand with a Sharpie.

Individual Meet Entries – Your swimmer will have the opportunity to let the coaching staff know what they would like to swim at each of the dual meets.  There will be index cards available for swimmers to record their name along with three individual events that they wish to swim. Upon completing a card, it should be placed in the black index card box.  Cards should be completed no later than Friday morning for the next week’s dual meet.    We will do our best to honor each swimmer’s request.

Relay Entries – Relay team assignments are made by the swim team software program, Hy Tek.  Please understand that just because your child is the fastest at a particular stroke for their age group, they may not be assigned that stroke in the medley relay; the program takes into consideration differentials between the first, second, etc…fastest in each stroke again to make the fastest overall combination.  If there is sufficient swimmer participation, we can enter more than one relay team per event.  Please do not leave a meet without checking with a coach first.  This is crucial since relays are often changed.

Team suits, caps and t-shirts are encouraged to be worn at meets, but are not mandatory.  It allows an easy way to identify team members and promotes unity among the team.  Swim caps are recommended for the guys and the girls. Only Southeast Swim team caps or caps with no writing are allowed at meets per CSA rules.

Goggles are also a good idea.  When selecting goggles, choose a pair that will stay on your face without the straps, this will ensure a good fit.  Make sure that straps are at the proper position on the back of the head and not drooping near the neck.  (It is a good idea to keep a spare pair of goggles – you never know when you might need them!!)

Bring two towels to meets as they get very wet throughout the evening.  Highly recommended would be “sweats” to wear between events, especially as the night sets in and it cools off.  You might want to consider bringing a cooler with snacks and drinks as well as card games, books, etc… to pass the time between events.  .

IMPORTANT REMINDER: Please write names with a permanent marker, on all items brought to meets, practices, etc….This is especially important since so many of the swimmers have common items.

Be a Volunteer!!!

EVERY parent is encouraged to help out during swim meets. Meets require an array of volunteers, home and away.  If you are not sure how you might be able to assist, please see a coach or another parent volunteer for additional information.  No experience is required for many of the jobs.  There will be sign up sheets on the bulletin board for different positions.

Dual Meet Volunteer Job Descriptions

Meet Referee:  The Meet Referee presides over the meet to ensure that it runs on time and makes sure that safety is provided as well as fair competition.  The Referee will have the final say in all matters regarding rule interpretations, infractions and league rule violations.  The Referee is to clear the course before the start of each race by the blow of a whistle.  At the end of each race, the Referee will sign all swimmer disqualification slips before they are sent to the scorer’s table and inform that swimmer (or coach) of the violation.

Starter:  It is the responsibility of the Starter to help the competitors achieve the best start possible.  The Starter is the only official who directly communicates with the swimmers before a race.  The starter calls the swimmer to ‘Step Up’ to the blocks, instructs the swimmers in the event and distance, ensures that the proper starting form is observed, gives the command, “Take your mark”, and activates the starting device.

Clerk of Course:  It is the responsibility of the Clerk of Course to organize, seat, and present the swimmers in the events and heats in which they have been entered on the Meet Entry Form.  The Clerk of Course keeps the swimmers organized in such a way that the meet can run in a smooth and efficient manner.

Timers:  It is the responsibility of the Timers to time the swimmers in each race.  Practice starting, stopping, and resetting the watch before the meet begins.  Timers must position themselves to have clear vision of the starter at the beginning of the race and clear vision of the final touch at the end of a race.  You will get wet and stay cool!

Stroke Judge:  The responsibility of the Stroke Judge is to insure fair competition among the swimmers assuring that each swimmer is swimming the designated stroke legally as defined by USS Rules.  It is the responsibility of the Stroke Judge to disqualify any swimmer whose stroke, turn or finish is illegal.  When a violation occurs, the Stroke Judge is to immediately raise their hand, complete the DQ slip, sign it, and hand it to the Meet Referee (or runner who will give it to the Meet Referee) for their approval.

Runner:  The Runner’s job is to move necessary meet documents and event cards from one place to another as needed.  Typically, the Runner collects the swimmers’ cards from each timer after a race is completed; and any DQ slips if necessary and takes them to scorer’s table or Meet Referee accordingly.

Announcer:  The Announcer calls swimmers to report to the clerk of course of the events.  Club announcements, reminders, scores, records, etc…are permitted as long as they do not interfere with the start of any event.

Scorer:  The Scorer keeps a record of each event with the swimmer’s name, team, time and points earned for that race.  Each team also keeps a cumulative total by event.

Newspaper Recorder: The Newspaper Recorder provides the necessary information to the News and Record so that meet results can be printed in the paper.  The form should be provided to the News and Record within 24 hours of the meet’s completion.

Time Averager:  This person is required to sit with the Scorer and average the times on each card based on the times recorded by the Timers.  (Only required when there are only two timers per lane.)

CITY MEET

Dates:  Thursday, July 9th, Friday, July 10th and Saturday July 11th.

We will be providing more detailed information as this event nears.  But for anyone who has never participated in the event, here is a brief description of what you have to look forward to!!!

(If you will be unable to participate in the City Meet, please sign up on the board by the Swim Team Room.)

The City Meet is a championship meet held for all teams who are members of the Greensboro Community Swim Association.  It is a three-day event and over 1700 swimmers participate.  The meet is held at Lindley Pool in Greensboro.

PARKING IS VERY DIFFICULT BECAUSE OF THE LIMITED SPACE IN THE LOT AND the narrow residential streets located near the pool.  The earlier you arrive, the better the parking.

Each team has an assigned tent location.  The tent is the swimmer’s designated place to ‘hang-out’ between events at the City Meet.  Swimmers should bring the same items to the City Meet as other meets; in addition, a sleeping bag/blanket, chair(s), and sunscreen are recommended.  Since the time between events is longer than at a dual meet, it is very important that swimmers have things to do to pass the time.  Cards, games, books, CD players, radios, etc…are all popular items to bring.  Just make sure that everything is labeled appropriately with the swimmer’s name.

There are bleachers directly in front of the pool for spectators.  Heat sheets will be available for purchase at the merchandise tent.  This will help parents keep up with the order of events and swimmers’ heat assignments.

Thursday’s events are ‘timed finals’.  However, Friday’s and Saturday’s events are conducted with preliminaries and finals.  Swimmers who qualify in the top 20 of an event during preliminaries return in the evenings for the finals.  Relays are the exception to this.  Relays are timed finals and are swam in the evenings as well.

Again, more information will be forthcoming as we get into the swim season and additional information can also be found at http://www.greensborocsa.org/.

Swimmers

~        I will remember that swimming is an opportunity to learn and to have FUN.

~        I will encourage good sportsmanship from fellow swimmers, coaches, officials and parents at all times.

~        I will do the best that I can at each practice, remembering that all swimmers have strengths and weaknesses, just as I do.

~        I will treat my coaches, other swimmers, meet officials and parents with respect at all times.

~        I will at all times control my temper and exercise self control.

~        I will refrain from abusive or insulting language.

~        I will adhere to the Code of Conduct at both home and away meets; and I will be respectful of other teams’ facilities, refraining from destructive behavior and cleaning up after myself.

~        I will expect to get out of it, what I put into it!!!

Failure to comply with these rules at practice will result in the following:  1) Verbal Warning; 2) Swimmer will have to sit out for 5 minutes; 3) Swimmer will be asked to sit by the pool exit for the duration of practice and a parent will be notified.  Failure to comply with these rules at a meet will result in a warning followed by parent notification.

Parents/Volunteers

~        I recognize that my role as a parent / volunteer, is to praise and encourage the swimmers and that the role of the coaches is to provide swimming related instructions.  (Swimmers Swim; Coaches Coach; Officials Officiate; and Parents Parent.)
